Isle of Wight Games 2011
A total squad of 84 competitors and support staff travelled to the island in time for the spectacular opening ceremony on Saturday 25th June, which attracted a crowd of 40,000 locals. An advance party of Shooters and 1/2 Marathon runners travelled a day early in order to get some practice before their events, with the remainder of the squad flying by charter to Southampton and sailing over to the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth.
The sports represented by Western Isles Team were; Athletics, Men’s and Women’s Football, Golf, Swimming and Shooting. Each squad was well prepared for the competition, having trained consistently in the run-up to the Games and competing in numerous events prior to the Games themselves. Expectations were high and the squads didn't disappoint!
Eilidh Mackenzie - Gold Medal - 1500m
Donnie Macleod - Silver Medal - 800m
Men's 4 x 400m Relay Team - Bronze Medal
Women's Half Marathon Team - Bronze Medal
Once again the squad is indebted to those who worked hard behind the scenes for their commitment and dedication prior to and during the Games themselves. Without the Executive Committee members, the Team Managers, physio/medical team, and media team the Games would not have been the success they clearly were.
We must also thank our sponsors, Bardon Hebrides (the official sponsor of the Western Isles Island Games Association), MG Alba and all the other businesses, community councils and other organisations for their support. Without them, the Western Isles may not have been represented at the Games.
