Aland Games 2009
The 2009 Natwest Island Games took place in Aland, a Finnish island located in the Baltic Sea in between Finland and Sweden.
The 80 strong Western Isles squad departed for Aland by Charter on the 27th June 2009, returning one week later with an impressive haul of medals and numerous PB’s.
The Sports being represented by Western Isles Athletes were; Athletics, Men’s and Women’s Football, Golf, Swimming and Shooting. Each squad was well prepared for competition, having trained consistently in the run-up to the Games and competing in numerous events prior to the Games themselves. Expectations were high and the squads didn't disappoint!
Eilidh Mackenzie - Gold Medal - 1500m
Eilidh Mackenzie - Silver Medal - 800m
Donnie Macleod - Silver Medal - 400m
Alison Campbell - Bronze Medal - 10k
Half Marathon Team - Bronze Medal
Let's not forget those who worked hard behind the scenes for their commitment and dedication prior to and during the Games themselves. Without the Executive Committee members, the Team Managers, physio/medical team, and media team the Games would not have been the success they clearly were.
We must also thank our sponsors, Bardon Hebrides (the official sponsor of the Western Isles Island Games Association), MG Alba, Harris Tweed Hebrides and all the other businesses, community councils and other organisations for their support. Without them, the Western Isles may not have been represented at the Games.
Congratulations to all competitors, managers and committee members for making the Aland Games a success!
